The project was initiated by the unfortunate floods in March 2023 at Stellenbosch University’s Bellville Campus which caused irreparable damage to the existing bridge culvert. The primary objective of the project is to construct a temporary bridge culvert with roadway adjacent to the damaged bridge culvert in a very short timeframe to reinstate traffic flow to their tenants, followed by the demolition of the damaged culvert bridge, the construction of a new bridge and roadway in the same location as the damaged culvert bridge, demolition of the temporary bridge culvert and finally canal erosion protection with environmentally friendly gabions and renno mattress systems.

The new bridge is sized to accommodate runoff stormwater in excess of 1:100 year floods. The design is in accordance with infrastructure compliance standards and City of Cape Town compliance requirements. Henry Fagan has been appointed to plan, design and oversee the implementation of this bridge project in short timeframe and deliver on time during the challenging 2023 winter conditions.
