BRIDGES & WALKWAYS

The iconic Art Deco Old Mutual Building was repurposed from offices to upmarket apartments in the early 2000s. Henry Fagan Consulting Engineers & Project Managers were appointed to co-design a skybridge to the building diagonally opposite with ample parking. The solution took the form of a glazed steel truss which was preassembled and craned into position. A sparse diagonal configuration was chosen to accommodate the kinked vertical cross section, with closer diagonal spacing near the ends to counter high shear. The bridge is pinned (bolted) on the Old Mutual side and supported on bearings on the other.
