Located in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, the site, with two existing structures, a 1920’s house and an 18th century barn. The barn, centrally located on the site, and surrounded by magnificent oaks was repaired and forms the centre of the new home. The original timber rafters are visible in the open-plan living, dining and cooking spaces. Some of existing fabric of old stone wall is on display against the modern white living area. Accommodation wings were added adjacent to the barn to create an enclosed external “werf” space. By keeping the new adjacent structures low, with flat roofs, the importance of the barn structure is emphasised and it remains significant component of the built form.
