MEGA PROJECT

LIFE Eugene Marais Hospital is a private hospital situated in Pretoria, boasting a level one trauma and emergence unit. The LIFE Eugene Marais Hospital: Radiology and MRI Project included a wide scope of refurbishment works within the radiology department, as well as the construction of a new MRI unit. This new MRI unit was constructed by clearing and demolishing-out the existing admin area and lining all walls, ceilings, and floors with steel plating to form a cage.

This cage is responsible for containing the magnetic field of the MRI. A Siemens MRI machine was lifted by a mobile 95-ton crane over the hospital roof, and into an open courtyard situated in the middle of the facility. This 3.2-ton MRI machine was wheeled into the hospital through a temporary opening which was broken into the adjoining wall. The MRI machine was accessorised with multiple UPS and IT plants as well as a 1.1-ton chiller which was crane-lifted onto the hospital roof.
